Rocks by Rail - Sentinel Sunday
On Feb 14 1974 the last ironstone was loaded at Harlaxton and Woolsthorpe quarries, and ironstone quarrying in the Vale of Belvoir came to end. Sentinel shunters Mary (Woolsthorpe) and Betty (Harlaxton) hauled the last trains on what became know locally as Black Valentines. Rocks by Rail commemorated the 40th anniversary of this event with their Sentinel Sunday on the 16th Feb with Sentinel Jean working the quarry trains and Sentinels Betty and Graham on display, along with steam loco Belvoir, which was posed outside the former Woolsthorpe shed. Sir Thomas Royden provided the steam power for the passenger trains.
